Baltimore MD, Inner Harbor

October 22, 2022

1 DAY
Baltimore Inner Harbor_edited.jpg

Once a thriving shipyard, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is now a visit-worthy destination with scenic waterfront views and historic attractions.  As soon as you walk onto the Inner Harbor, there’s a moment where your breath catches ever so slightly at how truly beautiful the heart of Baltimore City is.  The waterfront is postcard-perfect with the National Aquarium building on one side, historic ships anchored to the dock, and the iconic Domino Sugar sign off in the distance.  The Inner Harbor District has everything, from scenic waterfront views, to fresh seafood restaurants, to rich war history, and more!

Everyone knows our National Anthem and on this tour, we visit the site of the inspiration for our country's most famous and revered song... Fort McHenry!  Known for its legendary role in the War of 1812, and as the spark of creativity which inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner, Baltimore's Fort McHenry is an iconic and significant site of American history. Shaped like a beautiful star, the fort successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy during the Battle of Baltimore on September 13-14, 1814.  The sight of the flag of victory flying over the fort, it is said, moved Francis Scott Key so much it inspired him to pen what would become one of our nation's most beloved songs. We will visit the fort and learn about this and the many other stories it holds from the Civil War to WWII.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 (Breakfast)

AAD Breakfast 'n Go!

Morning motorcoach departure from Elkins, WV (6:00am) (additional pick-up locations are possible) to begin a wonderful day tour that offers a unique experience in Baltimore, MD. As we depart, enjoy a tasty breakfast sandwich and water/juice courtesy of our partners Great Harvest Bakery Company.  Upon arrival we visit Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine! Fort McHenry is best known for its successful defense of the city during the famous Battle of Baltimore that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover or just looking for something fun to do, Fort McHenry is a great place to visit.  Fort McHenry still stands as it did when "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there." Beautifully preserved, the fort is now protected by the National Park Service.

The afternoon finds you with several hours to visit and explore Baltimore's Inner Harbor!  Where Baltimore’s shipbuilding and steel mills once stood, you’ll now find a busy area for fun. The Inner Harbor District has everything, from scenic waterfront views, to fresh seafood restaurants, to rich war history, and a spectacular Aquarium!  The Inner Harbor is the heart of Baltimore, and the standard-bearer of its industrial and maritime heritage. In the 1950s, the area became an industrial wasteland and the buildings were eventually replaced with park land for public uses and events. In the decades that followed continued investment in the area has renewed the harbor. It now is home to the lion's share of Baltimore's tourist attractions. You will have time for lunch on your own, shopping, touring and exploring one of America's hidden gems!

Your return trip aboard the motorcoach takes in the beautiful scenery along the way, while you reminisce on a wonderful day of touring and travel to one of America's most important historic sites and !  A stop will be made for dinner on your own.  Estimated time of return is 11:55pm.
